What is dry rot wood and how can I tell if I have it?

Dry rot wood is decaying wood that can be identified by its look and its feel.  Dry root wood typically looks like it is cracked or peeling, with impacted area darker than surrounding areas.  Sometimes there is presence of green algae.  A good test for dry rot is to use a screwdriver or sharp object to poke at the wood.  If it goes in easily or feels soft and spongy, chances are that it's dry rot.  Dry rot damaged wood will spread if not taken care of.

What causes it?

Dry rot is caused by a specific fungus.  Under moist conditions, when spores in the air land on wood, the fungus will grow and attack the wood.  It digests the timber that gives wood its strength.  This process creates additional moisture that allows the fungus to continue to grow and spread to other areas, which is why it is crucial to repair or replace dry rot.  To begin with, it needs to be determined why the wood was moist to begin with.  Perhaps there may be a damaged gutter above, or potentially plumbing or roof leaks, or just poor ventilation.

What does dry rot wood have to do with termites?

While termites and dry rot repair may be isolated incidents, it is not uncommon to find both issues coincide with each other.  Termites require moist environments where they can access water.  Typically dry rot wood contains moisture, which is an ideal place for termites to start their colonies.  Since wood is rich in cellulose, it already serves as a feeding ground candidate for termites.  Combine that with moisture, dry rot wood is the promised land for termites.
